In reply to How long does it take for Zyprexa to kick in???, posted by Margit on August 24, 2001, at 17:00:07
I felt a hint of goodness the next day after taking my first dose. About 18 hours or so. In reviewing clinical studies, in seems patients have been documented as responding in one to two weeks. If it is not helping by the end of week two, then it probably is not going to help, OR the SSRI should be switched to Prozac instead of Paxil. That's because anecdotal evidence and clinical evidence suggests there is a special synergy between Prozac and Zyprexa, much more so than with any other SSRI. I can personally agree with that from my own trials.
It's just my opinion, but I would consider switching from Paxil to Prozac before considering giving up on Zyprexa. The switch can be done with only a one day washout. Start Prozac at 5mg per day by using the stir-it-in-orange-juice trick for custom size dosing. Increase it as tolerated.
Also just my opinion, the second strategy after that would be to replace Zyprexa with Risperdal 1mg or less for two weeks, and then Geodon for two weeks or less. But I think the best move at this point would be to switch from Paxil to Prozac. Even if you've already tried Prozac and didn't like it for whatever reason, it is very different when combined with Zyprexa.
John> I have been a little over a week on Zyprexa to augment the Paxil which doesn't seem to be working that well anymore. I have experienced the sedation as well as the food cravings; but I am still down. My pdoc gave me Ritalin at the same time; after 2 days I felt good for about 3 days, than that good feeling fizzeled out in a couple of days. Will the Zyprexa kick in yet? And is this normal for the Ritalin - will the good feeling come back? Thanks for any responses.
